Cameron-Dow Puts Warriors In A Spin
Cricket Ireland James Cameron-Dow's four wicket burst late in the day has left the Hanley Energy Inter-Provincial Championship clash between the North West Warriors and Northern Knights evenly poised. With the first day being abandoned, a draw stills looks the most likely scenario, but on a day when 16 wickets fell despite another 75 minute delay, all results are still possible. Cameron-Dow's heroics completely changed the context of the game, with the Warriors losing four wickets for just eight runs, all to the CIYMS left-arm spinner in the final 20 minutes of the day. Chasing the Knights first innings total of 167, The Warriors lost Craig Averill (12) early, bowled by the impressive Phil Eaglestone, who conceded just three runs in an eight over spell. David Rankin (9) also fell cheaply to Neil Gill (1-26), but the Coleraine pair of Scott Campbell and Kyllin Vardhan slowly but surely put the home side in the ascendancy. Vardhan (36*) and Campbell (22) added 63 for the 3rd wicket as the Warriors reached 90 for 2 late in the day. Thoughts of a sizeable first innings lead were torn to shreds however as Cameron-Dow bowled Campbell through the gate, and just four deliveries later fooled Stuart Thompson (4) with a quicker delivery. Nightwatchman Craig Young (1) lasted just six balls, and Cameron-Dow's final delivery of the day skittled Jan Frylinck to leave the momentum very much with the Knights, with the Warriors on 98 for 6, still 69 runs behind. Much will depend on Vardhan who is unbeaten on 36 - the South African having made an unbeaten century against the Knight sin the reverse fixture at Downpatrick two weeks ago. Earlier, batting first having lost the toss, the Northern Knights were soon in trouble against the Warriors seam bowlers, losing wickets at regular intervals. Stuart Thompson (3-23), Jan Frylinck (2-12) and Graeme McCarter (2-37) reduced the Knights to 108 for 8 to leave the Warriors in complete control. Greg Thompson - the youngest Irish international when he made his debut at just 16 in 2004 as a leg-spinner - showed his batting prowess as he top scored with 43 to help the Knights reach 167. The last two wickets added a valuable 59 runs, with James Cameron-Dow scoring a valuable unbeaten 19, with Lee Nelson (26) and Chris Dougherty (25) the other contributors of note. It promises to be an enthralling final day's play at Bready with the action getting under way at 11am. HANLEY ENERGY INTER-PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP |
