Northern Knights team to play Leinster Lighting on Friday 1st July announced

NCU Representative Directorate

The Northern Knights return to T20 action this Friday, travelling to Merrion to face the Leinster Lightning. The Knights are playing just their second game in the T20 competition having suffered a loss to the North West Warriors at Comber. The Lightning sit atop the standings with two wins from their two games.

The sides have already clashed several times across the various formats. Both three day games ended in draws with the Knights on top at several points without being able to force a win. In the 50 over competition the sides met at Stormont in early May where the Lightning came out on top chasing down the Knights’ score of 221 with 6 overs remaining.

There are several changes to the previous T20 squad that faced the North West Warriors at Comber. James Shannon returns from injury and takes over as captain from Nigel Jones who deputised on that occasion and Lee Nelson returns to the squad after impressing on his return to the 3-day squad.

Muckamore Wicket keeper Jamie Magowan comes back into contention and Rob McKinley also comes into the squad having shown good form in Premier League and T20 Cup action since his return from university. McKinley’s team mate Rusty Theron retains his place having shown all his experience during his debut conceding just 16 runs off his 4 overs.

The Knights will be looking to bounce back from the defeat in the opening game where the bowling restricted the Warriors to a very respectable total and captain James Shannon is confident the Knights will rebound. “The squad is excited and looking forward to Friday night’s T20 against Leinster in Dublin. A positive result is needed to remain in the competition and I have no doubt that we can achieve this by taking momentum from a good performance against the North West last week.”

The game takes place on Friday 1st July at Merrion cricket club in Dublin.
