On Saturday past Cregagh CC marked the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of the Somme before their 2nd XI home game against Instonians 4ths.

Captain of the 2nd XI Graham Watt read out the names of their members who made the ultimate sacrifice during the 1st World War.  Also remembered was William McFadzean who was awarded the VC posthumously for his selfless act on 1st July 1916, his Father was one of the founding members of Cregagh Cricket Club who received the VC from the King.

Also in attendance was the Captain of the 19th Boys Brigade Jim Ross, which is the Boys Brigade from McQuiston Memorial Church.  Both organisations played a major part in the formation of Cregagh Cricket Club.  Jim spoke on behalf of the BB and remembered those people who played various sports on the cricket field before the war broke, and many of whom no doubt volunteered for King and Country.

After a short prayer, Ian Kerr then read the poem 'In Flanders Fields', before both captains laid a poppy wreath at the stumps.

At which point the Bugler from the 1st Royal Scottish Regiment played Reveille followed by a minutes silence and brought the ceremony to an end with the playing of the Last Post.

At the going down of the sun, we will remember them.
