NCU Women win in the North West
Richard White NCU PRO The Northern Cricket Union Women's team travelled to Fox Lodge Cricket Club, on Sunday July 1st, to play their North-West counterparts. This was a re-arranged fixture as only a few weeks previously the game had been abandoned after sixteen overs due to adverse weather conditions. Hannah Grieve won the toss and asked the North West Women to make first use of a green wicket. The accurate new ball partnership of Staci Maxwell and Abbi Leckey placed early pressure on the opposition batsmen, leading to Maxwell claiming the wicket of Emma Allen in her first over. Amy Hunter entered the attack after seven overs and proceeded to dismiss three frontline North-West cricketers in her first four balls. Karen Haslett top scored for the North-West with 40 runs in an all out total of 105. Spin proved vital for the NCU with Beth McCrea and Jennifer Hanna claiming five wickets between them. The NCU opened their innings with Amy Benson and Alison Cowan, with both looking solid despite the very accurate, stump to stump bowling from the North-West opening attack of Amy Caulfield and Alana Dalzell. The latter claimed the wicket of Benson with the last ball before lunch. Unfortunately, shortly after the resumption the NCU lost two wickets in close succession to run outs. This included the dismissal of Alison Cowan who made a well constructed thirty runs, and she will be frustrated not to have taken the NCU Women through to the victory target. A great partnership between Amy Hunter and Hannah Grieve followed, with Hannah finishing on 24 not out, including the only six hit of the game. The NCU Women won by five wickets, and the coaching staff were thrilled to get the first win of the summer, but have identified areas of the game to develop and improve for future fixtures.
